Matt Vander Heiden
Lecturer in New Testament and Preaching

Role at SMBC:
As part of the New Testament team Matt lectures in New Testament and preaching units. He also leads a college fellowship group with his wife, Kiri.
Prior to SMBC:
After school Matt studied Commerce at university before working in the travel industry for several years. In 1999 he left work to study at SMBC, where he met his wife Kiri. In 2005 their family moved to Portugal where Matt oversaw the Academic Department of the Portuguese Bible Institute and lectured in Hermeneutics, Expository Preaching, New Testament, and Evangelism and Discipleship. The family moved back from Portugal in mid-2018, moving to Sydney in December of the same year to start work at SMBC.
Academic Interests:
- Petrine studies - Peter's use of the Old Testament, particularly in 1 Peter; Canonical approaches to Petrine studies
- The place of suffering in the Christian experience
Personal:
Matt and Kiri have two daughters and a son. While missing many aspects about living in Portugal, they are enjoying getting to know Sydney and making it home. Matt loves sport of almost any kind, but he especially likes cricket, AFL and NFL. He and Kiri also enjoy watching historical period dramas together.
